Not every opening on a porch needs to be an operable window.
Fixed tempered-glass units can be used where ventilation is not needed or where the shape, size, or location makes a fixed window the better choice. They can also be combined with Xtend vertical 4-track windows to create custom layouts that work with the architecture of the porch.
Where Fixed Glass Makes Sense
Fixed glass is commonly used for:
- Trapezoid windows under sloped rooflines
- Transoms above doors
- Lower panels used as part of a fall-protection design
- Small openings that are not large enough for an operable Xtend window
- Areas where you want light and visibility but do not need ventilation
You can see more examples and details on our Fixed Glass Porch Windows page.
Fixed Does Not Always Mean Less Expensive
It is easy to assume that a fixed window should cost less because it does not open.
That is not always the case.
Our fixed units use 1/4" tempered glass, and depending on the size, a fixed glass unit can actually cost more than an operable Xtend vertical 4-track window.
For that reason, we generally use fixed glass because it solves a specific design, size, or safety need — not simply because the window does not need to open.
Mixing Fixed and Operable Windows
A porch does not need to use only one type of window.
Operable Xtend windows can be combined with fixed glass to work around sloped ceilings, knee walls, railings, doors, stairs, existing structural posts, and unusual opening sizes.
For elevated porches, fixed tempered glass can also be part of a fall-protection solution.
The best layouts usually use each type of window where it makes the most sense.
Custom Layouts Are Okay
Not every porch needs perfectly identical windows.
Different widths can work very well when the architecture calls for them. What matters most is that the overall layout looks intentional.
Whenever possible, we still recommend keeping window heights consistent along each elevation so the horizontal sash lines remain aligned.
For wider openings, mulled Xtend windows can also be combined with fixed glass or other custom elements to create a clean layout.
Start With the Overall Design
If you are building new or making major framing changes, it can be helpful to work through the window layout before every opening is finalized.
Sometimes a small framing adjustment can create a cleaner layout, reduce the need for special shapes, or allow more of the porch to use operable vertical 4-track windows.
If you are still planning the openings, our new-construction information is a good place to start.
