Two Ways to Install Xtend Porch Windows: Retrofit or New Construction

Porch projects are not all built the same way, so porch windows should not force everyone into the same installation method.

Some homeowners already have a finished screened porch and want to add windows with as little disruption as possible.

Others are building new and want the windows installed during framing, then trimmed out like conventional windows.

Xtend was designed to work with both.

Option 1: Install Into a Finished Opening

For an existing screened porch, Xtend can be installed directly into a finished opening.

The opening is already framed and trimmed, and the window is secured through its exterior mounting flange.

We provide color-matched installation screws, so in many cases the window can be installed and the opening is essentially finished.

This works well for:

  • Existing screened porches
  • Remodels
  • Openings that are already fully trimmed
  • Some existing metal screen-framing systems

It is a straightforward way to turn an existing screened porch into a more usable three-season space without rebuilding the entire porch.

Option 2: Install During Construction

Xtend can also be installed during the framing stage, much like a conventional window.

The window is installed first. Exterior trim can then cover the mounting flange, while interior extension jambs or finish trim can be added afterward.

This works especially well for:

  • New porch construction
  • Major remodels
  • Contractors who want to install windows before finish trim
  • Projects where the interior wall depth will be finished later

Our new-construction porch window guide goes into more detail about planning the framing and openings for this type of installation.

Why Xtend Was Designed This Way

Traditional vertical 4-track porch windows are generally designed to be installed after the opening is completely framed and trimmed.

Xtend was developed to give homeowners and contractors more flexibility.

The window can adapt to the project instead of forcing the project to adapt to the window.

That same thinking carries through the rest of the Xtend design. Features such as cast aluminum sash corners, enclosed sash frames, integrated mulling, predrilled mounting holes, factory-finished screens, and serviceable components were all developed to make the windows easier to install, use, and maintain.

What About Future Service?

A common question with new-construction-style installation is what happens if the mounting flange is covered with exterior trim.

The good news is that the parts of an Xtend window that could reasonably need future service remain accessible.

The sashes, vinyl, tracks, and screens can all be serviced without removing the complete window frame from the wall.

So covering the flange with trim does not mean you are permanently burying the serviceable parts of the window.

That was another important part of the Xtend design: if something is ever damaged or worn, the goal is to repair or replace the part — not replace the entire window.

You can learn more about this in our wind, damage, and repairability article.

The Opening Measurement Is the Same

Whichever installation method you choose, the basic measurement is still the same.

Measure the finished opening that the window frame inserts into, from one solid mounting surface to the other.

Xtend windows have a 1" mounting flange around all four sides. Xtend doors have a 1" flange on the top and both sides, but not along the bottom.

Our measuring guide explains exactly where and how to measure, along with things to consider before finalizing the openings.

Choose the Method That Fits the Project

One homeowner may want to upgrade a finished screened porch without rebuilding it.

Another may want the windows installed as part of the normal framing and trim sequence.

Xtend gives you both options.

The goal is simple: give homeowners and builders more flexibility during construction while keeping the windows easy to install, easy to finish, and easy to service for years to come.
