One of the most common questions we hear about vinyl-glazed porch windows is:
“If the vinyl is flexible, how can it possibly hold up in strong winds?”
It is a fair question. The clear vinyl in an Xtend Porch Window can flex when you push on it, which can make it seem more delicate than traditional glass.
We hear this concern especially from customers in areas that experience hurricanes, tornadoes and other severe storms.
But flexible does not mean fragile.
Independently Tested to 153 MPH
In March 2025, we sent a 42" × 84" Xtend Porch Window to Element Materials Technology for independent structural testing.
The window was subjected to 60 pounds per square foot of pressure for 10 seconds, which Element reported as equivalent to 153 mph. The window passed.
Part of the reason the system performs so well is that the vinyl can flex under pressure. It can bow and stretch as wind loads increase, then retract as that pressure decreases.
At extreme loads, the bigger concern is not necessarily the vinyl tearing. It is whether the sash itself remains securely captured within the window frame.
Then Mother Nature Added Her Own Test
In April 2026, we learned that a home with Xtend Porch Windows and doors had endured a tornado.
And the wind was not the only problem.
Outdoor furniture became airborne and ended up inside the porch.
Several screens, tracks and sashes were damaged by the flying debris.
But the main Xtend window frames remained intact.
For a little perspective, solar panels were blown off the roof, and the home's air-conditioning unit ended up next door.
This was a serious storm.
What Happened Next Is Just as Important
The homeowner did not need to replace the entire porch full of windows.
They did not even need complete replacement windows.
Because Xtend is designed with individually replaceable components, we were able to manufacture the damaged sashes and tracks and ship the replacement parts within a week.
The replacement components were essentially plug-and-play.
Remove the damaged part. Install the replacement. Put the window back into service.
Meanwhile, some of the other storm damage to the home took months to repair.
That experience reinforced something we have believed from the beginning:
A custom window should not become disposable because one component gets damaged.
Screens can be replaced.
Tracks can be replaced.
Sashes can be replaced.
Vinyl can be replaced.
And because we manufacture Xtend ourselves, we can make the parts our customers need instead of telling them they need an entirely new window.
Flexible Doesn't Mean Fragile
We would never call any porch window tornado-proof, and nobody should remain on a porch during severe weather.
But this storm gave us an unexpected real-world look at what can happen when conditions go far beyond normal.
The tornado and flying debris damaged parts of the Xtend windows.
The main frames survived.
And instead of replacing the windows, we simply made the damaged components and shipped them out.
That is exactly why we designed Xtend to be serviceable in the first place.
Built to flex. Built to last. And when life — or occasionally a flying patio chair — happens, built to be repaired.
